Abstract: The opening up of border areas has facilitated the cross-border flow of factors between China and neighboring countries, becoming a new driving force for improving trade efficiency. This study is based on the theory of inter-regional trade and regional economic integration, innovatively constructing the Border Region Openness Index, and using a stochastic frontier gravity model to test the correlation between the level of openness in China’s border regions and the trade efficiency between China and neighboring countries. The results indicate that the overall trade efficiency between China and the 14 neighboring countries is still at a relatively low level, and border opening has a significant positive impact on the trade efficiency between China and neighboring countries, with this effect being more significant in the northwestern border region.

Key words: border openingup; trade efficiency; neighboring countries; random frontier
